The Stanstead Granite & Miniature Train Museum

The Stanstead Granite & Miniature Train Museum

August, 2009
Stanstead
819 876-5576 / 1 866 533-GEMS

In the mist of major investments in the tourism sector in the Stanstead area, the Granite Museum announces an important expansion of its services which will contribute to a growing range of attractions in the area; The Stanstead Granite & Miniature Train Museum.

Following the study of different potential projects, the Board of the Museum, chaired by David Bourgon, approved the addition of a most impressive exhibit of Lionel©  miniature trains.

For that purpose, a section of the GranitExpo building will be transformed into a 2,000sq ft modern exhibit space for the train collection, next door to the granite Museum. The permanent exhibit will feature more than 1,600 cars  (scale of 1/48th) and a direct link to the granite industry will be represented by a six hundred and forty square feet (16' X 40') scale model landscape of the Memphremagog area and its old railway system and granite quarries. The collectible cars will be installed within the next few weeks as for the scale model landscape and railroad system, it will be part of an ongoing project created by amateur model makers over the next few years. Visitors will also be able to see the construction and even participate during special workshops open for kids 9 to 99, to be announced.

Of inestimable value, this collection, the most significant in Canada, has been compiled over the last sixty years by a well known figure of Stanstead, Mr Robert Sheldon. Mr Sheldon, a passionate collector, is member of a dozen international collectors associations such as the TCA (Train Collectors Association), the LCCA (Lionel Collectors Club of America) and the TTOS (Toy Train Operating Society). There are approximately two hundred serious collectors of his type in Canada. Mr Sheldon's pieces date as far back as 1906.

This exhibit will be open to the public this coming August. This project is made possible by a generous loan of the collection by Mr Robert Sheldon, Vice-President of the Museum, and by an important investment by  Mr Gabriel Safdie, Director of the Board and David Bourgon, President and co-founder of the Museum.

All expect an increase in tourist trafic due to this attractive and unique collection. Visitors of all ages and organized tours will surely enjoy this amazing collection and find another reason to come to the beautiful Stanstead area.
